How Conservation Works in the Truckee Meadows
Our community is fortunate to have a very unique water system. Water conserved by TMWA customers is kept upstream and saved as drought reserves, or is released into the river for the benefit of fish and wildlife. It is not used for growth. Even when the community has enough water supply to meet customer demands, we ask customers to use water responsibly since our water system is dependent on winter snowpack to replenish our upstream storage reservoirs. When residents and businesses use this resource wisely, we have greater flexibility in meeting the water needs of all customers.
Our water conservation programs reflect our commitment to stewardship of the region's water resources, as well as the requirements of:
- TMWA's rules and local ordinances for Reno, Sparks and Washoe County guide our enforcement of water waste and our Assigned-Day watering schedule.
- Truckee River Operating Agreement (TROA)
- Nevada state law, which requires TMWA to submit a Water Conservation Plan to the Nevada Department of Water Resources
- Regional Water Management Plan, which is maintained by the Northern Nevada Water Planning Commission (NNWPC) and the Western Regional Water Commission (WRWC). As the largest water purveyor in Washoe County, TMWA is a key player in guiding the region's water conservation efforts.
